Movie Morsels: Lawrence Kasdan on the Han Solo STAR WARS Spin-Off Movie

Thanks to Memorial Day, we have a shorter work week than usual, but Hump Day is no less a cause for celebration. So let’s rejoice with the latest word on the Han Solo Star Wars prequel! Plus, our first look at Cars 3, a new featurette on The Conjuring 2, and more…

Han Solo Star Wars Story

Hail, Caesar!

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m actually more eager to see what Lucasfilm/Disney does with its Star Wars prequels/spinoff films than with its continuation of George Lucas’ original saga, what with a more or less blank slate on which to work and the weight of fan expectation decidedly lessened. We just heard that Rogue One will undergo extensive reshoots in July, and now no less an authority than Lawrence Kasdan has chimed in to let us know how things are going with the Han Solo, er, solo film, starring Alden Ehrenreich (pictured above in Hail, Caesar!). Speaking with Atlanta Business Chronicle Senior Online Editor Jacques Couret at last month’s Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (where he received an Icon Award), Kasdan said that filming will begin in January of 2017 for a May 2018 release…

“You know, Chris Miller and Phil Lord are going to direct it. They’re great, funny and imaginative and we’ve had a great time together. My son [Jon] and I wrote the script and Chris and Phil are working on it and they’re about to move to London to start shooting in January. And it should be fun… They’re actually scheduled for May. The [other Star Wars films] are falling on Christmas — Rogue One and Episode IX. Han will come before Episode IX.”

Kasdan revealed that he’s also become more involved with Episode VIII and Episode IX than he expected to be…

“I have a little information!” he teased of the current trilogy’s arc. “[Star Wars Episode VIII director] Rian [Johnson] is a friend of mine. I’m getting to know Colin Trevorrow, who is going to direct Episode IX. So I feel very involved with it.”

Cars 3

Yes, I know the Pixar sequel we all really want to hear about is The Incredibles 2. But while we wait for news about that extravaganza, USA Today has the first-ever concept art from the upcoming third Cars film. It depicts Lightning McQueen racing against his new instructor, Cruz Ramirez. Described as “a young Hispanic female race car,” who helps him compete against a rookie upstart in the “Florida 500,” Ramirez is the yellow car in the following images by Pixar’s Noah Klocek…

The Conjuring 2

Wondering how James Wan builds the scares in his horror films? A new featurette for The Conjuring 2 includes an interview with the director in which he explains just that. The sequel to 2013’s surprise hit The Conjuring sends its paranormal investigators (played once more by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) to jolly old England in the 1970s, where they confront the infamous “Enfield Poltergeist”…

Transformers: The Last Knight

Finally today… We have a very advanced teaser for director Michael Bay’s final Transformers film The Last Knight, which reveals that the villain once again will be the mighty Megatron, and that production starts this month.

As a bonus, Bay has also revealed via Instagram one of the film’s new Autobots on the streets of Cuba, taking the form of something far removed from the Transformers’ usual heavy metal…

Cuba! There’s a Robot in there. A video posted by Michael Bay (@michaelbay) on

Transformers: The Last Knight arrives on June 23, 2017.
