While TV fans are rejoicing that Coach is rising from the grave to feast on the nostalgia of the living, movie maniacs shouldn’t despair because we have a metric ton of news for you today in Movie Morsels. Superheros, super-sized explosions, and supremely entertaining behind-the-scenes stories abound, so get readin’!
Tyrese Gibson isn’t just one of the stars of Furious 7; he’s looking to become a member of the Justice League. The actor posted a fan-made rendering of him as Green Lantern known as John Stewart
In a lengthy caption that accompanied post, Tyrese clarified that playing John Stewart isn’t just about playing a “black superhero”; rather, it’s about Tyrese playing an iconic character:
“I don’t need to ‘campaign’ for anything. I took the Oath and I’m ready to suit up as John Stewart IF it lands this way….. Great seeds have been planted at Warner Bros., they know I’m very excited about the possibilities.”
Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet. Rumors have been circulating that Chris Pine might be eyed to play the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern. If nothing else, Tyrese has made his intentions known to Warner Bros., but it’ll be a matter of time until we find out who’ll usher us through the Blackest Night.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
With a little over a month to go until Avengers: Age of Ultron, more and more TV spots are beginning to pop up. The latest one comes all the way from Australia, and offers a few bits and bobs of new footage for you to salivate over.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Let’s face it — the only thing you need to know is that there’s a brand new Mad Max: Fury Road teaser and it’s filled with explosions galore. The movie comes out on May 15, 2015, which isn’t nearly soon enough.
Chances are that you didn’t see Force Majeure, the film Nerdist News head writer Ben Mekler calls, “the funniest thing I saw last year.” The Swedish dramedy about a family on the worst ski vacation of their lives and an ensuing avalanche is apparently being eyed for an American remake. Who could star in this deeply uncomfortable film? According to the latest reports, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in negotiations to star. Considering how wonderfully she handles cringe comedy on Veep, JLD sounds like an ideal candidate.
The Billionaire’s Vinegar
Is it sour grapes for Matthew McConaughey? Possibly, but that’s only because he has signed on to star in The Billionaire’s Vinegar, a film based on Benjamin Wallace’s book, The Billionaire’s Vinegar: The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine. The book tells the story of one of the largest scandals ever to hit the wine industry, in which former music manager turned wine dealer Hardy Rodenstock acquired several bottles of wine that he claimed were once owned by Thomas Jefferson. The bottles sold for $156,000 and $500,000 at auction — so you’d better be extra careful with those corks.
McConaughey will next be seen alongside Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe in Gus Van Sant’s suicide drama, The Sea of Trees, about the Aokigahara Suicide Forest in Japan.
Though we’re eagerly awaiting any tidbits of news over whether a LeBron James-starring Space Jam 2 will ever happen, this bit of classic Space Jam news had us reeling. Evidently, Michael Jordan talked smack to actors during Space Jam pick-up games.
In an interview, actor Keith Gibbs revealed this little gem when asked whether or not Jordan trash talked him:
“Oh yeah, nonstop. [Laughs.]
He didn’t give a shit who you were. When I was doing Space Jam, we played three days. I thought it was over. I had to go out of town. I get a phone call, they’re like, ‘Why aren’t you here?’ I was like, ‘Oh, they’re still playing?’ I had no idea.
I walk in, and it’s Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Alonzo Mourning, Charles Oakley. Grant Hill shows up. Jerry Stackhouse shows up. Now, all of a sudden it’s an NBA All-Star pickup game. Every night. I did that for about a month and a half, two months. Then the UCLA kids came in, and they had just won a national title — Ed O’Bannon and those guys. Just phenomenal. Best pickup games I’ve ever been a part of. It was unreal.
Yeah, so Jordan … I had to guard Reggie Miller and Michael Jordan in back-to-back games. It was so bad. I was friends with Chris Mills and Tracy Murray — we had been to some camps together. One play, I got switched onto Jordan, because Chris was like, ‘Keith, you take him.’ Jordan hit a 35-footer on me. I mean, it was ridiculous: leg out, tongue out, all that stuff … hit a 35-footer on me and goes, “GET THE F*CK OFF THE COURT.”
