Happy Tuesday, and welcome back to another installment of Movie Morsels! This column is our daily recap of the best film news that you may have missed. To start off your morning on a good note, we’ve got news from the Dungeons and Dragons movie, trailers for Star Trek Beyond and Joshy, a Power Rangers update from Bryan Cranston, some very welcome Doctor Strange details, and a release date for the Minecraft movie! Movie Morsels powers, engage!
Dungeons and Dragons
The long-awaited big budget Dungeons and Dragons movie is a step closer to reality. Warner Bros. is reportedly in negotiations with The Fault in our Stars‘ Ansel Elgort to play the leading role in D&D. Considering that Warner Bros. isn’t shy about its intentions to make D&D into a multi-film franchise, the studio is placing a pretty huge vote of confidence in Elgort.
There’s no word about who Elgort would play in the movie, but it’s widely rumored that Vin Diesel may appear in the film as well. Diesel is a lifelong D&D fan, and he’s been lobbying for a role in the pic. We wouldn’t be shocked at all if director Rob Letterman takes him up on that.
Star Trek Beyond
The third and final Star Trek Beyond trailer has arrived, and it plays a little bit more seriously than the first two trailers. This time, the new footage is accompanied by “Sledgehammer,” a new song by Rihanna.
Star Trek Beyond will beam down into theaters on Friday, July 22.
We were as surprised as anyone when Bryan Cranston was cast as Zordon in the upcoming Power Rangers movie. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cranston indicated that he’ll have more to do than just be the giant blue head who gives the Rangers their orders.
“The tenant of that storyline is that this a real person who is trapped in this etherworld and it becomes this in-the-wall so to speak of [the command center],” said Cranston. “He still has a heart and mind, but an agenda that he’s got to get these five Power Rangers to defend the earth or else everyone they know will be killed.”
Cranston also indicated that he’ll be doing some motion capture work as Zordon.
Power Rangers will be released on March 24, 2017.
Benedict Wong may be playing Wong in Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie, but he’s not going to be anyone’s manservant! Instead, it sounds like Wong will have some mystical training of his own. In fact, he might be the one training Strange!
“I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant. We’re heading in a different direction,” said Wong during an interview with Den of Geek. “There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange actually, he’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”
Doctor Strange will be materializing in theaters on November 4.
Last year, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney was signed to direct the Minecraft animated movie. Earlier this week, Mojang announced that the adaptation will be released on May 24, 2019! In a statement on the company’s website, a spokesperson wrote: “Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right? That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!”
Now, here’s a comedy that we’re really looking forward to! Joshy stars Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch as the title character, who goes through with his bachelor party plans despite the last minute breakup with his bride-to-be. This one has a great supporting cast, including Adam Pally, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Alex Ross Perry, Jenny Slate, Aubrey Plaza, Lauren Graham, Alison Brie, and Jake Johnson.
Joshy will be out in theaters for a limited release on Friday, August 12 before migrating over to Hulu.
