Marvel Studios has already slated a sequel to this past summer’s surprise hit film Ant-Man, with Ant-Man and the Wasp already scheduled for a 2018 release. Stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily are set to return as the title characters, as is director Peyton Reed, but now it looks like another key player from the first movie is a lock for a return as well: Michael Douglas.
The actor has confirmed that Marvel has indeed contacted him about returning as the original Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym. In a recent interview with Collider, here’s a portion of what he revealed about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“[I] Just got a call recently – they want to negotiate for a sequel and I thought ‘That’s great!’ Hopefully, I won’t have to carry quite as much expositional dialogue as the first one but I had a wonderful time doing it. Just a great, great time. The cast was fantastic. Paul, Evangeline, Michael Pena – I’m sure he’ll be back. If they can scrape Corey Stoll off the wall, I’m sure they’ll want him too – he’s such a good villain. And Peyton too.”
Personally, I hope we get to see some flashbacks to the retro adventures of the original Ant-Man and Wasp in the sequel, but with Douglas in the part, and not a re-cast younger actor. The digital de-aging of of Michael Douglas in the opening bits of Ant-Man were pretty amazing, and looked far better than attempts to do that kind of thing in other movies like X-Men: The Last Stand and TRON: Legacy. And if they could pull that off for a longer sequence involving a younger Pym and his wife, Janet Van Dyne, that would be amazing for longtime Marvel fans.
Ant-Man and the Wasp currently has a release date of July 5th, 2018.
