The May the 4th presents keep on coming. After revealing who Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o are playing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Kylo Ren and Maz Kanata, respectively), Vanity Fair has also given us the first official look at Gwendoline Christie’s character. Prepare yourselves because it’s awesome. Christie is playing Captain Phasma. How’s that for a name? Look at how glorious she is in this photo by Annie Leibovitz:
That chrome armor. The cape.
Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones, has been seen once before in her shiny chrome armor–she appeared in the second teaser for The Force Awakens. Fans have been calling her the “chrometrooper.” We don’t know much else about Captain Phasma at the moment except that she’s a member of the First Order (the new version of the Empire) and that she has an incredibly imposing demeanor. I certainly wouldn’t want her on my tail.
This development made my heart grow three sizes. It was my wish and hope that Christie would be stepping into the role of a villain in Episode VII. She has more than enough presence to pull it off, and I’d love to see her take on a personality like that of Ysanne Isard’s in Legends (Isard was the coldhearted Director of Imperial Intelligence in several non-canon stories). Besides feeling excited about Christie showing her range, it’s tremendous that we have a female villain in play. Feelings. I have them.
What do you think about this announcement? Are you looking forward to seeing Christie go a little evil? Anyone think she’s undercover or playing both sides?
