Marvel Studios Doctor Strange movie has been filming for a few months, and it’s finally gotten around to casting the good doctor’s right hand man. Benedict Wong has signed on to portray Wong, Strange’s sidekick.
Although some of the earliest Doctor Strange comics portrayed Wong as Strange’s manservant, later storylines made their relationship a little more equitable. In the Marvel Universe, Wong’s family was dedicated to serving Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One. Wong himself was raised in a remote monastery where he learned both the martial and the mystical arts while preparing to serve the eventual Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange.
Wong is also Strange’s friend, personal chef, and housekeeper, as well as the protector of Strange’s body when Strange’s mind is off exploring other mystical realms.
Benedict Wong is currently starring as Kublai Khan in Netflix’s Marco Polo series, and his previous projects include The Martian, Prey, Covert Affairs, MI-5, The Wrong Mans, Kick-Ass 2, and Prometheus.
The Doctor Strange movie features Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, with Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West. Mads Mikkelsen is playing the film’s primary villain, and Rachel McAdams is portraying a character who is believed to be based on Marvel’s Night Nurse.
Doctor Strange will cast its spell on moviegoers on November 4.
