MARIO MAKER Used For Romantic (and Nerdy!) Marriage Proposal

Sometimes it feels like Mario Maker was solely created so people could design versions of Mario to drive people insane. However, one romantic nerd used it for a very different reason: to ask the love of his life for her hand in marriage.

We came across this geeky, incredibly sweet, and most importantly successful video game marriage proposal at Mashable, and it was shared by YouTube user Retro Shanerator (real name Shane Birkinbine), who filmed his girlfriend Pam playing his very important custom level.

Because she needed to complete the level to get to the actual proposal, he guided her along to the finish, where he then pointed out that the bricks above started spelling out her name. From there it was just a mad dash to the end, where he had written out “Will you marry me.” Stunned but excited, she said yes through some very happy tears. (Normally, Mario Maker just makes people cry from anger and frustration, so this is some great PR for Nintendo.)

I’m a big sentimental sucker at heart, so I always find these things touching. Not only do we get to experience two people having a genuinely special moment in there lives, but the nerd in me really appreciated the added bonus of him putting an extra life at the end, as well as his insistence that she finish the level. If she hadn’t completed the run it would have felt like a very bad omen for the marriage, but now we’re confident these two issa gonna be okay!

We imagine the wedding will be a blue overalls affair, with turtle soup and mushrooms on the menu, but what else should they include to give their big day a more Mario feel? Give us your best ideas in the comments below.
