Lucy Lawless Joins MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Lucy Lawless Joins MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

As it progressed, the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. grew into something more than anyone expected, and one of the main reasons why was the fantastic side-characters that appeared on the series. From Saffron Burrows’ Victoria Hands to Patton Oswalt’s Eric/Billy Koenig, if there’s one thing Marvel’s always been good at, it’s casting both big and small roles across various projects. Knowing that, right before Comic-Con no less, TV Guide has unveiled a brand new actress that will coming to the show next fall–Lucy Lawless.

According to the outlet, Xena herself is coming to the series in season two. Unfortunately – though not at all surprising – the outlet is unaware of what role (or for how many episodes) the actress will be playing on the show. Considering prior work, her casting could go anywhere from top X-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to Asgardian. It seems we’ll just have to wait until the fall – or at least this weekend – to know exactly what Lawless will have in store for Team Coulson.

The next season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is shaping up very nicely. It’s going to be interesting to see how the team deals with the task of rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D., in addition to how the series will set things up for Avengers: Age of Ultron in May. If it ends up being anything like the way things went with Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past season, then we’re in for one hell of a treat.

What do you think of this latest bit of Marvel casting? Let us know in the comments below!

Hold the Door! How Hodor's Reveal Could Change the Future of GAME OF THRONES!

  1. I’m pulling for her to be an Asgardian.

  2. Cory says:

She was broken hearted when she heard Actor Kevin Smith/Ares died shooting a late film in China/The Great Wall in 2003. He did a stunt, not a stunt man flipped snapped his neck, cracked it with no harness and died of internal bleeding. RIP Kevin. She loved him before she married her husband Robert Tepper both the Hercules and Xena Executive Producer.

  3. James says:

Lucy Lawless is amazing, loved her Xena series and the variety of talents she brought to that show. Can’t wait to see her in one of my favorite current shows 😉

  4. She is so talented. Action, drama, comedy, singing, dancing, slapstick….
And that was only on Xena. Really hope she’s a regular on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, she’ll definitely improve the already good ratings. Imagine if she joins the Marvel cinematic universe in an Avengers film. Joss will get to direct Xena as well as Buffy. Awesome sauce.

  5. Joshua Smith says:

    HELL YEAH!!!

  6. John dorian says:

I just want to start a female thor coming to sheild rumor…..

  7. Aquasnakes54 says:

Kind of odd as they could have added Cobie Smulders as Martha Hill, as she have been on the show already as well as the movie.  And Cobie could bring her HIMYM fan base.

  8. Am I the only one that saw this announcement and immediately thought of her playing the Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine?

  9. patti says:

Will watch…Lucy glad to see you!!  Oh, and Xena too!!

  10. DRHBashur says:

Freaking AWESOME! Great news to get first thing in the morning.

  11. Peyton says:

“As it progressed, the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. grew into something more than anyone expected,”

Not true. Whedon fans knew the show would start out slow and build into something awesome.

You are also crediting Marvel for something that is another Whedon hallmark, clever, nerd fanservice, casting across various projects.

I think the casting of Lucy Lawless is awesome but it’s exactly what I have come to expect from the Whedons.

  12. Samgreycat says:

    Can’t go wrong with Lucy!!!

  13. Aaron says:

I was just listening to The Bitter Suite on my mp3 player yesterday.  Can’t get enough Xena!

  14. kate says:

She would make an amazing wonder woman!!! (I know, I know, not marvel- but man, would she ever!)

  15. I loved her as D’Anna in BSG so it’s a thumbs up from me!

  16. My husband and I make Shield a date night and we can hardly wait til it starts again.

    • Jimbo says:

      That’s really sad

      • Nate says:

Because two people that enjoy something together take the time to do so?
Know what’s sad?  People who are too immature to understand the value in this so they have to make an obtuse statement to make up for their own life’s emptiness and shortcomings.
Come back when you grow up child.

  17. Maui says:

I only wondered who else is next up in line for being in a show like this?  Karl Urban? What other NZ actors should be in this Maybe?

  18. Paul says:

Really excited I hope they use her full potential

  19. Missy says:

YES, LOVE TO SEE LUCY LAWLESS IN THIS SHOW,! hope she will be around for the entire season, and then some.

  20. scottbd says:

    Excellent casting!!

  21. judy winn says:

I think for any show, Lucy Lawless is a great addition. She’s is one of the best actors around, in my opinion. You made a great addition & have a new viewer. Wish you the best!

  22. Tee Hubbert says:

Possibility She could also be setting up a character/agent to later go on “Agent Carter”

  23. PeteHSL says:

    Me gusta

  24. don says:

    she’ll be the chellist?!? :3

  25. Brad C says:

I could easily see her playing Valkyrie, She-Hulk or even Spider Woman. But, Agents of Shield is more story orientated. I see her more of a Shield agent joining for a few episodes

  26. Xavier Quach says:

Love the show, but the popularity of AoS has nothing to do with casting.  It’s completely about the movie tie-ins. Prior to CA:WS people were writing about how horrible the ratings were and wondering why AoS got a second season at all.

    • Andrew Singleton says:

      Are you high?
The ratings were never ‘horrible’, just a little less than Marvel had hoped. Still ranked at #1 for it’s timeslot in the 18-34yr demographic (the most important in tv). And, no one wondered why it got a second season BEFORE Cap2 came out, as it wasn’t renewed until May (when the rest of the ABC renewals were announced).

  27. I wonder If she might be Sky’s mom? Still betting Sky is a Skrull.

    • Tee Hubbert says:

hmm..Like the Idea of Sky’s Mom..But Still don’t see Sky as a Skrull.

    • silent_one89 says:

Can’t be a skrull, I think Fox owns the rights for Skrulls, thus why we got some generic unknown aliens in the Avengers.

      • Chad says:

Those weren’t generic unknowns…they were Chitauri, introduced in Volume 1 of The Ultimates.

      • Sean says:

Fox owns the rights to the Super Skrull (the skrull with all of the Fantastic Four’s powers) but not the whole race.

  28. Lvng1Tor says:

There are no words to truly  express THE BIG GAY GEEK OUT I’m having at this moment!!!

  29. Ace says:

    She’s the new Thor

    • Tee Hubbert says:

Sure hope not. I am Not anti -feminist..I Just think making Thor a female is a mistake. Thor has ALWAYS been the God Of Thunder..Son of Odin!

      • daniel says:

No, he hasn’t.  He was a frog, he was an alien.  The comics are not the mythology.

      • Kevin Breen says:

Not making Thor a female. The female Thor is a new character who replaces him, and this being comics, he’ll be back sometime before THOR 3.

  30. silvia says:

    maybe replacinAgent Grant Ward?

  31. RonnieW says:

I am just trilled to see Prime Time T.V. interesting to me without seeing grown men fighting in their underwear ans seeing real sci-fi with mega stars getting real roles to play and going back in time to see how these charactors  got where they are today…The show started off a little slow but I never waivered. I knew it would be a hit..

  32. Dave K. says:

I’m gonna guess… Titania! Perfect level villain (I’d say about C-List) and started out as a normal human and got technologically enhanced to be larger and super strong.

  33. Eric Gregg says:

Hopefully she plays Ron Swansons wife, when Ron joins the fight against hydra using fabulous wood worked weapons

  34. Bull Bainter says:

  35. I hope she plays Madam Hydra that would be a great character for her to play

  36. jackie says:

    I hope she plays Xena

  37. OMGwhat says:

It’s obvious some people just expect her to play some female warrior from the asgardian or another Marvel race … when she could be cast for something entirely different like an Agent of shield or hydra , or a plain love interest . She isnt just limited to the range of wonderwoman clone /amazonish warrior  , as good as she was in this particular role

  38. dave says:

Am I the only person on the planet who doesn’t see the appeal of Lucy? She isn’t pretty and she cant act.

    • OMGwhat says:

Not the best but she definitively can . She managed just fine playing multiple personalities on BSG … had a decent stint on one of the current best tv comedies , and was convinging enough as all around nefarious and insane lady in Spartacus

    • ken says:

      Watch spartacus blood and sand

    • Please give us an example of who you would find attractive, as most people would label Lucy as smokin’ hot.

  39. Priest says:

    Madame Hydra

  40. She would make a great SIF Asgardian warrior maiden

    • kluu says:

They already have Jane Alexander playing Sif in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and she has already appeared on the show.

  41. to bad she cant do to much acting and she wont be a big role since xena she hurt her back doing her stunts and cant do to much acting

    • Keith says:

She was a major character in battlestar, though.

    • OMGwhat says:

Of course she can act , she wasnt an action hero in Battlestar Galactica nor Spartacus , and was more than fine in those

    • Mary says:

She injured her pelvis in the second season of Xena, but the show continued through six seasons.

  42. Please, She-Hulk!

  43. cokieisme says:

She played a FBI agent on Veronica Mars and did a pretty great job (sadly only one episode). I can’t wait to see whatever it is she does. (Crossing my fingers for more than one episode!)

  44. Waatu says:

A slow transition to the new female Thor, maybe? That would be a bold move.

  45. Neil says:

Asgardian Lucy Lawless would be epic.  Hope she still makes appearances on Parks and Recreation.  Though with the time jump and Ron’s marriage track record, they have an easy out for her not showing up (though, prior to the time jump, his life was going well, so it would be a shame if they chucked that).  As someone who didn’t watch Xena, Lucy, for me, is one of those actors who appear in shows I like and do an excellent job in them.  I loved her in BSG and the aforementioned Parks and Recreation.
