Celebrity voice-over is all the rage lately, but two new animated movies have really upped the ante. First up is Dreamworks’ Captain Underpants: The adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s famed children’s book series has been in the works since 2011, but it appears that the film has finally found its heroes in Ed Helms, Kevin Hart, Jordan Peele, Nick Kroll, and Thomas Middleditch.
In case you’re not familiar with the series, here’s a summary: Best friends Harold Hutchins (Middleditch) and George Beard (Hart) have invented their own superhero, Captain Underpants, and somehow hypnotized their steely headmaster Benny Krupp (Helms) to turn into their caped crusader whenever anyone snaps their fingers. The books have the trio face off against various villains, but in the film, the boys and Captain Underpants have two main nemeses: the aptly named Professor Poopypants (Kroll) and an evil nerd named Melvin (Peele).
On the other side of the cartoon spectrum we have Untitled Pets Movie, a new Universal/Illiuminations picture from Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the writers of Despicable Me. Deadline reports that the 3D film will feature the vocal stylings of Louis C.K., Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet, and Kevin Hart (again).
Untitled Pets Movie revolves around, you guessed it, pets, who spend their days in a Manhattan apartment complex complaining about their respective owners. Unsurprisingly, Louis C.K. voices an observant, sharp-minded terrier whose world turns upside down when his owners adopt a sloppy street pooch (Stonestreet). After their budding rivalry turns them out on the streets, the two dogs stumble across Snowball (Hart), an adorable little bunny… hell-bent on revenge!
Details are still a little fuzzy (wink), but the universe is always a little better with more Louis C.K. in it.
