Here’s something you didn’t know your Wednesday needed: a piano cover of Shôji Yamashiro’s theme for the anime classic, Akira.
The cover, and visually striking video, comes to us by way of Geek and Sundry’s Player Piano channel. “Akira” features composer and pianist Sonya Belousova with guest cellist Eru Matsumoto shredding on their respective instruments. Director Tom Grey evokes the 1988 animated film (and the manga that inspired it) in this video featuring some of its costumes and characters and the gentle whispers of “Kaneda.”
The combination of costumes and the dingy bar from the film all work well to evoke Otomo’s masterpiece. The only way it’d be more perfect is if the piano were somehow strapped to the back of Kaneda’s bike.
So what do you think? Does “Akira” conjure up memories of Neo-Tokyo for you? For that matter, what other iconic anime tracks deserve the cover treatment.
