Behind-the-scenes changes are afoot at the Netflix’s original series, Sense8. And for the first time ever, the Wachowskis are going solo.
The Wrap was the first to report that Lilly Wachowski has left Sense8‘s second season, with Lana Wachowski remaining on board. Lilly Wachowski recently came out as transgender, and the initial report indicates that she is taking time off to “focus on her well-being,” with the option to potentially return for the third season—if Netflix renews. Nerdist has confirmed with a source close to production that while Lilly has taken a backseat on the show this season, she is still active as a co-creator.
Sense8 was created by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) and the Wachowskis, with the entire twelve episode first season co-written by the trio. The Wachowskis also directed seven of the twelve episodes, and that’s the void that Lana Wachowski is currently filling solo for the new season. It’s honestly difficult to tell what each Wachowski sister brought to their signature style indivually, because all of their previous efforts have been collaborations. They are best known for directing The Matrix trilogy, and their most recent film was Jupiter Ascending.
That’s not the only departure this season. Last month, Aml Ameen left the series early in the production of season two over creative differences. Considering that his role, Capheus, is one of the core eight characters who share a consciousness, that’s a major change! Rather than writing out Capheus, the part has been recast with Toby Onwumere.
Sense8 season 2 is expected to premiere in 2017, but there may be a Christmas special later this year.
