Remember in 2011 when LCD Soundsystem played their farewell show at Madison Square Garden to 14,000 people (and thousands more who were watching it live online), all celebrating the brief but storied career of perhaps the most important indie band of the 2000s? In the blog post announcing the show, the band wrote, “if it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever!!!”
It turns out that the show wasn’t much of a funeral, because the deceased usually don’t come back from the dead. In any case, we are very happy about this.
First, the band released a Christmas single. Then, it was announced that they will headline Coachella. Now, it turns out that the fun won’t stop at Coachella, as the band’s website says, “2016 tour dates coming soon.” Consequence of Sound also reports that the band has “signed on to headline several other prominent music festivals across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe.”
If all that isn’t exciting enough, the band also just announced that the Christmas single isn’t a one-off release, as LCD Soundsystem is indeed working on a new album they intend to release by the end of the year. In a lengthy blog post, Murphy wrote, “we’re not just playing coachella. we’re playing all over. we’re not just having some reunion tour. we’re releasing a record (sometime this year—still working on it, actually), so this isn’t a victory lap or anything, which wouldn’t be of much interest to us.”
Now that it’s official, let us know in the comments if LCD Soundsystem’s upcoming record is the one you’re most looking forward to in 2016, or if something else has your eye.
