Christmas doesn’t just have a monopoly on seasonal songs, it owns the entire catalog. But why? Thanksgiving is the far, far, far superior holiday. It has all of the food, family, and friends of Christmas, without any of the stress of shopping malls and long lines. Plus,a whole day of football on TV. That’s why it deserves some musical love too, and fortunately Kristen Wiig came up with an entirely new Thanksgiving Day tune during her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live this weekend.
Unfortunately the lyrics have nothing to do with anything regarding the actual facts of Thanksgiving, but at least they were wrong enough that it brought out some very famous friends to try and correct her.
A few things we feel impelled to correct: There were not aliens at the first Thanksgiving (no matter what the History Channel would have you believe), and we are fairly certain Betsy Ross and FDR never met. Also, Columbus was not Korean—that’s just a common misconception. So sure, this song is the real-life equivalent of a trending Facebook “news” story, but since our Thanksgiving musical options are so thin, we’ll take it. (In any event, Steve Martin
and Will Forte
should just go on tour, a tour where Forte tries to convince all of us how close he and his dear friend Steve are all while Martin secretly shakes his head no at us for two hours.)
