Later this month, gamers will get their first taste of the newest Final Fantasy world in the animated feature Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. Within that story, two kingdoms in conflict come together for a wedding that could end a decades-long war. But as you’ll see in our exclusive preview, the peace has already been shattered!
To make sense of this clip, you’re gonna need some context. The kingdom of Lucis is one of the last territories in the world of Eos that isn’t under the control of the Niflheim Empire, which has embraced advanced technology. Lucis, which instead favors magic, may have been holding out for years, but King Regis (Sean Bean) reluctantly accepted a peace agreement because he knew that his kingdom would inevitably fall to the Niflheim if he didn’t. As part of that deal, he agreed to have his son, Nox (the leading character of Final Fantasy XV) marry Lena Headey’s Princess Lunafreya, a former ally of the kingdom who has spent the last 12 years as a hostage of the Niflheim.
Unfortunately, the Niflheim aren’t really interested in peace, and now the war has literally come to the royal throne room. Aaron Paul’s character is Nyx, one of the Kingsglaive. He is a warrior who draws upon the king’s magic for his own power and strength, and who has the ability to teleport to wherever his sword is at any given moment. Princess Lunafreya is also present in this scene as she attempts to help King Regis escape with his life while Nyx battles General Glauca of the Niflheim.
This Friday, August 19, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is getting a limited theatrical release in North America before coming to digital HD on August 30. The Blu-ray and DVD release will follow on October 4.
