Their show may be off the air, but Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele still managed to make a huge impression on the Super Bowl yesterday. First, the two had their commercial during the game and accompanying live commentary event, but the Key and Peele creators really got to shine after the game, during Stephen Colbert’s special post-game episode.
If you anything about Key and Peele and their relationship with football, then you’re starting to understand what’s going on here. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert brought back one of the duo’s most beloved characters, the goofy-named football player Hingle McCringleberry from their “East/West Bowl” sketches, for a new sketch joined by Colbert as player Kimble Mathias.
This time around, we actually see the guys in some in-game action, and they sure do manage to run up the scoreboard. But with every touchdown is a celebration, and that’s where it gets interesting—because of course they celebrate, and of course they do it excessively. The commentators provide a disclaimer early and say that the ref imposes some strict celebration limits, but he sure does also entrap the players into penalties by aiding their elaborate post-score maneuvers.
In one end-zone dance, McCringleberry, played by Key, and some teammates roast the football on an open fire and eat it, while the official, played by Peele, offers up his penalty flag as a napkin, only to then throw it and call the penalty.
This may be as close as we’ll get to the return of Key and Peele, so watch the hilarious sketch above and let us know what you think in the comments below.
