Nothing says male strip club like “Free Radicals” by The Flaming Lips—at least according to Joe Manganiello.
Hello friends and welcome to the inaugural episode of Celebrity Playlist, our original series in partnership with Spotify. Over the course of the next ten weeks, we will be talking music with some of our favorite famous friends as they recount pivotal life stories soundtracked by some of their favorite songs.
In our first episode, Manganiello discusses the soundtrack to his directorial debut, the male strip club documentary, La Bare. Researching for his role in Magic Mike, the actors went to Dallas, Texas, to scope out the most famous male strip club in the country, La Bare. He was so inspired by the stories he found and the people he met that he resolved to document their personal and communal trials.
But Joe didn’t just want to repurpose the throbbing beat of the club music that La Bare played for its dancers, he wanted to subvert expectations about the film you are about to see, which is why the first song you hear is by the Flaming Lips. The rest of the soundtrack is equally surprising with sullen, sometimes brooding tracks from Wolf Gang, Z-Trip, and Poliça. After you’ve watched the first episode of Celebrity Playlist above, be sure to check out the tracks Joe discusses in the Spotify playlist below.
Stay tuned next week for another episode of Celebrity Playlist, and let us know if you are jamming out to Joe Manganiello’s playlist as hard as we are. You can stream La Bare on most VOD platforms now, and you can also catch Joe in Magic Mike XXL , out July 1.
