It should be said that David Tennant is hardly a villain—but he does play one on TV. Well, on Netflix (and that time in Harry Potter, too, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Debuting November 20th, Jessica Jones is the follow up to the incredible Marvel’s Daredevil series that took binge watchers by storm earlier this year, and the new trailer gives us our first look—erm, sound?—of Tennant’s character in the series.
It’s been known for ages that Tennant will be playing the series’ villain Kilgrave a.k.a. Purple Man, and although we don’t get to see his purpleness just yet, the ominous and threatening voiceover as Jones tacks up leads on a wall is pretty spectacular. The pictures eventually make a mosaic that show a bit of his face, but it’s the voice-over that does it for us. Seeing Tennant as a villain is sure to be as delightful as it was when Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Kingpin came onto the Daredevil scene. Other than his days as the over the top baddie Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, we more often than not think of Tennant as heroic. This departure from our default Doctor-centric thoughts of him already cemented in our minds has got us waiting on bated breath to see just how villainous he can be.
The series will follow superhero-turned-detective (Krysten Ritter) as she rebuilds her life after hanging up her cape. It’s an interesting premise considering today’s film and TV superhero onslaught: a character who no longer takes part in the vigilantism of super-heroics, but still hears the call to help in some way?
