From Rilo Kiley to the Watson Twins to incredible solo albums to one-off collaborations–Jenny Lewis has reinvented herself and her sound again again. Her most recent reinvention: Nice As F*ck, a band comprised of Lewis, Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster, and The Like’s Tennessee Thomas. Much to our delight/surprise, the group dropped their eponymous album today, a perfect treat for the weekend.
The badass lady trio formed earlier this year, performing first at a Bernie Sanders rally and then embarking on a small tour with Lewis’ pal M. Ward. Obviously, we were over the moon at the formation of this supergroup. Eager for any new tunes, we jammed out to some of the live footage of their performances on Jenny Lewis’ Instagram, and then last week, they shared the first song off their self-titled debut album, “Door.” The song instantly set itself apart from Jenny Lewis’ most recent, truly excellent album, “The Voyager,” with its quick tempo, pop punk bass, and dreamy reverb. NAF’s full album, which is now available to stream on Spotify, evokes more of those girl-band vibes.
And while this new music is certainly different from the band’s previous work, you can sense each of their influences in “Nice As F*ck.” Lewis’ voice is so iconic at this point, you can recognize it in minor background vocals, not to mention at the forefront of this new sound. Each song, no matter how energetic or rebellious, has a wonderfully ethereal quality to it thanks to her echoey crooning. Just try not to sway to “Mall Music,” bop your head to “Higher,” chant the powerful words to “Guns,” or fall in love with “Cookie Lips.” We dare you.
Nice As F*ck (as well as some awesome merch) is now available to purchase directly from the band. We’ll be listening to it on repeat all summer long.
