Warning: spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy ahead.
Director James Gunn has had a pretty good August. Guardians of the Galaxy premiered on August 1st and busted box office numbers, and everyone I know can’t stop talking about the film and playing Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix. The film dropped just a few days before Gunn’s birthday, but Marvel decided the success of Guardians wasn’t a big enough present. They gifted him an Infinity Stone:
Gunn shared a photo of the replica on Instagram and said, “Pretty wonderful birthday gift from the folks at Marvel.” Ya think? If I were Gunn, I’d take this as a sign that Marvel wanted to me to be in charge of the Cinematic Universe. It is the Power Stone after all. The Stone is a match to the one that appears in Guardians, and it even comes with the Orb. The placard features a quote from Peter Quill. Here’s hoping a collectibles company jumps on mass producing these.
If you paid close attention to Guardians, you might be wondering why this replica is red when the Power Stone was purple in the film. Comicbook.com noted that Gunn addressed the question on Facebook. He said, “The power stone is purple because the aether already took red. And it’s a better color for GotG.” Hey, it works for me.
And for those of you playing spot the Infinity Stone at home, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured four of the six Stones. The Power Stone is the Orb (Guardians of the Galaxy), the Space Stone is the Tessaract (Thor, The Avengers), the Reality Stone is the Aether (Thor: The Dark World), and the Mind Stone is presumed to be the blue crystal in Loki’s Chitauri Scepter (The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
