James Gunn Receives an Infinity Stone from Marvel for His Birthday

Warning: spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy ahead.

Director James Gunn has had a pretty good August. Guardians of the Galaxy premiered on August 1st and busted box office numbers, and everyone I know can’t stop talking about the film and playing Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix. The film dropped just a few days before Gunn’s birthday, but Marvel decided the success of Guardians wasn’t a big enough present. They gifted him an Infinity Stone:

Gunn shared a photo of the replica on Instagram and said,Pretty wonderful birthday gift from the folks at Marvel.” Ya think? If I were Gunn, I’d take this as a sign that Marvel wanted to me to be in charge of the Cinematic Universe. It is the Power Stone after all. The Stone is a match to the one that appears in Guardians, and it even comes with the Orb. The placard features a quote from Peter Quill. Here’s hoping a collectibles company jumps on mass producing these.

If you paid close attention to Guardians, you might be wondering why this replica is red when the Power Stone was purple in the film. Comicbook.com noted that Gunn addressed the question on Facebook. He said, “The power stone is purple because the aether already took red. And it’s a better color for GotG.” Hey, it works for me.

And for those of you playing spot the Infinity Stone at home, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured four of the six Stones. The Power Stone is the Orb (Guardians of the Galaxy), the Space Stone is the Tessaract (Thor, The Avengers), the Reality Stone is the Aether (Thor: The Dark World), and the Mind Stone is presumed to be the blue crystal in Loki’s Chitauri Scepter (The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier). 1. Chad says:

Lokis Staff Mind Gem, Aether power, Tesseract space, The orbs inner stone has to be the Time Gem I would think as reality..well reality might work..and soul is in the possesion of Adam Warlock or it was at one point..hard to say in the old cinematic U

  2. Jason says:

Pretty sure Loki’s staff is at best just powered with the Mind Gem somewhere else by Thanos, because how much sense does it make for him to give Loki the gem when he’s trying to get them all together?

  3. No The Mind gem is in Loki’s staff because whenever he controlled someone it was with that(ex whenever his staff touch someone physically.

  4. Dr. Kenneth Noisewater says:

    Wasn’t it Quill’s Mom’s mixtape?

  5. Yeah, pretty sure that Loki’s staff is the Space gem. He didn’t have the thing until after the events of Captain America

  6. Chris says:

The colors of the comic gems are wrong in the picture. It should be blue for mind, yellow for reality, red for power, purple for space, orange for time, and green for soul. Also Marvel hasn’t confirmed which stone the Aether is, or that the scepter is one at all.

  7. Brandon says:

I really don’t think that Loki’s staff was the mind gem. In the Avengers they say that the staff was powered by the Tesseract, this would make both the staff and the Tesseract the Space Gem. They are born of the same cloth.

    • Eugene says:

Additionally, they are the same color, which supports your line of reasoning.

    • Shayde says:

I think you’re right there, because the staff was made of the same stuff, that’s why it penetrated the force field.
