Here’s The Course Of “Course of the Force”

There’s news from the Course of the Force front — we now know where all the stops will be on the course of the Star Wars lightsaber relay from Santa Monica to San Diego July 7-11. We’ve told you before about the epic relay benefiting Make-A-Wish that will lead to San Diego Comic-Con International, but we now know more details, and here they are:

On July 7th, the relay will launch with an event at the Santa Monica Pier at 10 am Pacific, featuring a “Conival” with expo booths, activities, and entertainment. That evening, the relay will reach Redondo Beach Pier, where it’ll hunker down for the night at 7 pm before restarting the next morning at 7 am. July 8th’s run will end at the Huntington Beach Pier, where the lightsaber should arrive at about 4:30 pm and where there’ll be another “Conival” for all. On July 9th, special sponsor promotions will rule the day; we’ll know more about that later, but there’s a “Conival” event scheduled for Oceanside Pier at 4 pm. July 10th’s course will take the lightsaber from Oceanside at 7 am to Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach at 5:30 pm, and then, finally, on July 11th, the lightsaber will leave PB at 7 am and will reach the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego at 12:30 pm if all goes as planned, with entertainment (in a ticketed event; the Conivals are free to the public) at the conclusion.

Okay, then, this thing is coming into focus, getting closer, all that stuff, and it’s time you signed up to run. It’s a $500 sign-up fee with all the registration money going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and runners receiving a Star Wars Ultimate FX lightsaber from Hasbro plus other gifts. Click here to register. There’ll also be prizes for best costumes (Star Wars or pop-culture themed), so dress to impress. The whole shebang is being brought to fruition by the alliance of Lucasfilm, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Nerdist Industries, Octagon, and Machinima, and it will be broadcast on the Nerdist Channel on YouTube, Machinima, and But come on out in person if you can, whether you’re running or cheering the runners on.  Great time, great cause.

This is cool, but I have a few questions:

    1. So the last stop is at the Balboa Theater, ending around noon the same day as preview night for Comic-Con. Will you guys be down at Balboa then as well as on the 13th for your podcast, hanging out perhaps?

    2. Where is this entertainment? At the Balboa Theater, or at the adjacent Horton Plaza?

    3. What should I do about this rash?

    4. I’m assuming you don’t have to run all legs as a registered participant? That is a long freakin’ run, especially one done in full cosplay gear. Can I just run the PB to downtown SD leg?

    5. If we only chose to watch, where are the mile markers with the lightsaber swaps going to be? Photo op!!

My (newly married) husband and I are going. We’ll be dressed up as Amy and Rory a la running away from the Silence.
