This weekend all things cute and adorable took over Downtown Los Angeles during the first annual Hello Kitty Con. Not even food was safe from the cute, where Kitty Chan’s face was properly applied to everything from Hello Kitty lattes to burgers. Arts and crafts workshops were also offered at the Con, where you could learn how to do things the kitty way for just $10 (along with Con admission).
“What’s the cutest thing in the world? Cupcakes. What’s the second cutest thing in the world? Hello Kitty.” Chef Duff Goldman speaks the truth. Duff’s Hello Kitty Cupcake workshop sold out almost immediately, with fans excited to learn from the star of Ace of Cakes, the first (and best) baking reality show which took a look inside Duff’s Charm City Cakes in Baltimore. Who can forget the episode where they brought the Star Wars Millennium Falcon to life in cake?
During the one hour session Duff and his crew walked excited Hello Kitty fans through creating kitty-fied decorations for their provided pre-baked cupcakes. As the eager students rolled fondant and piped buttercream, Duff came over and worked with each and every person, and his humorous and helpful nature made the class fun and easy going for all skill levels.
Take away tips from the class:
– Use cornstarch when you roll fondant so it doesn’t stick.
– Just the smallest hint of water makes fondant stick to fondant like glue.
– Space Hello Kitty’s eyes too close together and she looks nothing like Hello Kitty.
– Edible ink pens are a baker’s best friend.
– Piping ain’t easy.
Duff Goldman’s Charm City Cakes West is participating in the Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt, which offers exclusive Hello Kitty pins with purchase. The Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt runs through November 21, 2014.
