Fans of Mabel and Dipper Pines will be sad to learn that Disney XD and series creator Alex Hirsch will end Gravity Falls in 2016. Hirsh made the announcement in a post on his Tumblr this week, which we’re including below in its entirety. Here’s the gist of the news.
Hirsch explains in his post that the decision to end the show was his own and not Disney XD’s, a statement upheld by the network. Gravity Falls has been one of the most watched shows on the network since it began thanks to a smart mythology, fun world, and dedicated fanbase. The network told Variety:
“Alex Hirsch had a masterful plan for the stories and characters of ‘Gravity Falls’ and, through 40 episodes and 17 shorts, he and a team of outstanding writers, artists and actors consistently delivered an inspired and unique story. Alex made the decision to conclude the story at this time, and while we’re disappointed we all won’t have the opportunity to explore more of the ‘Gravity Falls’ world, we respect his creative vision.”
Hirsch maintains that the vision for his show, from the beginning, was a contained one. He wanted the journey of Mabel and Dipper to have a beginning, middle, and end. Over the course of two seasons with 20 episodes each and a handful of shorts released online, that original story is nearing completion. This week, viewers will get to see the penultimate episode of the series before it goes on hiatus until 2016. An exact release date for the final episode has not yet been released.
