Things are about to get chilly in Gotham.
Now that season two is finally about to premiere with a whole new tagline (goodbye, “Rise of the Villains,” and hello, “Wrath of the Villains!”), Nerdist has your exclusive first look at the new villain about to wreak total havoc on the city. Get ready for Mr. Freeze!
No, not that Mr. Freeze.
Gotham is going to show us the origin story of the iconic Batman baddie by starting at the very beginning, when Victor Fries (House of Cards alum Nathan Darrow) was just a scientist looking for a way to save his wife from dying. Of course, since his experiments lead to killing innocent people with his too-cool-for-school freeze ray, the GCPD immediately takes interest.
“When we meet Victor, his wife, who he loves deeply and devotedly, is terminally ill,” Darrow says in our exclusive video. “He has to experiment on actual people, which is something that he’s not telling his wife. And it has not been successful so far.”
Victor’s noble intentions muddy the waters of his status as a pure villain… even though he is, after all, killing people.
“It’s a thing that I’m very proud of on Gotham,” Ben McKenzie says, “where we really examine who the ‘bad guys’ are. Most of whom start off as decent people, trying to make their way in a brutal world.”
McKenzie’s co-star Donal Logue agrees. “Again it’s a villain whose primary motivation is from, actually, a really decent place—to try and save his wife’s life and maybe even give ultimately a gift to humanity,” he says. “It just goes awry. This is where Gotham gets into, really, the best stuff. It’s a really good time to be in Gotham.”
Check out what else McKenzie, Logue, Darrow and Robin Lord Taylor have to say about the introduction of Mr. Freeze in the exclusive video above!
Gotham returns Monday, February 29 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
