When there’s something strange on your local listings, who ya gonna call? Sony Animation! Specifically to bring the Ghostbusters back to television in a brand new animated series entitled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force! According to a report from Deadline, Sony Animation is doing exactly that, eyeing an early 2018 premiere date for the futuristic animated TV show, which will expand the burgeoning Ghostbusters cinematic universe even further.
Little is known about the animated series so far. According to the official description from the studio, Ghostbusters: Ecto Force will take place in the year 2050 and focus on the next generation of Ghostbusters who battle and capture otherworldly spirits around the globe with the help of local teams. While this next generation of Ghostbusters could well be the female team that will be featured in director Paul Feig’s forthcoming Ghostbuster movie, but my guess is that it will focus on an entirely new team. Perhaps they will introduce legacy characters to tie it to that universe, but something tells me it would be in more of an Egon Spengler/Extreme Ghostbusters capacity.
Ivan Reitman and his production company, Ghost Corps., are spearheading the production of Ecto Force, which will reportedly skew towards a younger audience. No word on if this is the same project as the reported Ghostbusters animated movie being directed by Fletcher Moules or another project entirely. The announcement from Sony also included news of television series adaptations for both Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, too. Fingers crossed that Sausage Party will do well enough to get a Netflix spinoff of its own!
