Director Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt looks like it’s going to be one of the most insane movies in recent memory. The film features a new take on the Egyptian gods that places them in the realm of sci-fi fantasy as they battle for control of their empire. But the context for this war of the gods is definitely unexpected.
Take, for example, this newly released exclusive scene from the film that finds Set (Gerard Butler) confronting his father, Ra (Geoffrey Rush) over Set’s wayward ambitions while they travel on… Ra’s space ship? And when Set moves to attack Ra, the elder god goes into beast mode and attempts to incinerate his son. All of that takes place in under a minute!
Regardless of whether or not Ra survives this encounter, we know that Set is going to win the battle. The entire premise of Gods of Egypt is that Set has seized power, which forces his brother Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to ally himself with a mortal named Bek (Brenton Thwaites) in a bid to restore the empire. As for Bek, his only goal is to save his true love, Zaya (Courtney Eaton).
Before she makes her appearance in Marvel’s Daredevil as Elektra, Elodie Yung costars in Gods of Egypt as Hathor, the goddess of love; while Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) appears as Thoth, the God of wisdom who may be an ally to Bek and Horus.
Gods of Egypt hits theaters this Friday, February 26.
