While Yoda toys nowadays tend to include his lightsaber and draw on his Clone War skills, it bears repeating that “wars not make one great.” Hot Toys, however, does make one great. And while sister company Sideshow made an excellent prequel Yoda figure, Hot Toys has introduced a sculpt of the one we all loved first: the Star Wars Jedi master as he appeared in The Empire Strikes Back.
Yoda figures, for higher-end companies, invariably face the dilemma of “how can we expect people to pay full price for a littler guy, even though his body requires all-new tooling and is therefore even costlier than some of our taller figures?” In this case, the value is added by a base with levitating boulder effects, and an extra head-sculpt of the Dagobah denizen with eyes shut, using the Force to levitate an X-wing that you’ll never find shelf space for, if they ever even make it. He also comes with a light-up power unit, because sometimes Hot Toys just like showing off how much elaborate stuff they can replicate. Should you want him to make alternate hand gestures, you can, as he includes a few options, depending on whether you want him holding a cane, or making power gestures.
Who da toy? Yoda toy! Man, remember when the first wave of Empire Strikes Back Kenner figures hit and Yoda wasn’t part of it? I had to use Greedo as a substitute until they finally came out with what was then one of the most elaborate figures in the line. Today there are no such problems.
