It’s time to get excited about Dean Israelite’s upcoming Power Rangers reboot, because the fifth and final Ranger has been assembled. The Yellow Ranger will be played by rising star Becky Gomez (AKA Becky G.), who has several TV credits to her name, as well as performing on the soundtrack for The Smurfs 2.

Gomez joins a slew of other up-and-coming actors, including Naomi Scott (The Martian) as the Pink Ranger, Ry Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as the Blue Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, and Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger. The script is being written by the power-team of Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (they wrote X-Men: First Class and Thor together, and now they’re working on the script for Top Gun 2.)
This reboot is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit series. The film will stay true to the series, following a group of ordinary high school kids as they find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers. They must eventually harness those powers, if they want to save humanity. It might sound like an old concept, and it is, but if you watched the TV series, you’ll remember that each Ranger was distinct and likable, which drew the audience right in to whatever treacherous journey awaited them.
Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that Saban Entertainment confirmed that the film will use the names of the original characters, meaning that… it’s morphin’ time for Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Billy and Trini! Power Rangers will start filming in January 2016 and is scheduled for release on January 13, 2017. So, yeah. There’s a while to wait, but you could always revisit the series in the meantime.
