The trailer for Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment of the venerable Fast and the Furious franchise, just got unleashed and it has left us in a state of shock. After all their high speed adventures together could Dom really be abandoning La Familia? That seems to be the case from the trailer, which shows Vin Diesel‘s beloved street racing family man switching sides and joining forces with a sinister cyber criminal played by Charlize Theron. What could have lead Dom, who once famously said “you don’t turn your back on family,” to turn his back on family? We have a few theories and we’re breaking them down in today’s Nerdist News.
Dom goes missing from the series for the second and third movies. Could this be because he was kidnapped by the government and brainwashed into being a sleeper agent, just waiting for the right trigger phrase to activate him? …Or maybe he was hacked! Charlize Theron is playing the ultimate computer hacker and, as we all know, the ultimate computer is the human brain. But maybe we have it all wrong: maybe Dom isn’t actually turning has back on family, maybe all of this is to protect the family. In the trailer we see a photo of his sister Mia and her family, after all. Maybe they’re being held hostage and won’t be released until Dom agrees to Theron’s demands. What happens when family is forced to turn against family? It’s a question as old—and as furious—as time itself.
We won’t know for sure the reasons for Dom’s betrayal until Fate of the Furious is released next year. Until then stay loyal to your Nerdist la familia by letting us know all of your Fast and Furious fan theories in the comment section.
