Female comic book characters wearing gravity-defying and impossibly minuscule costumes is not really anything new. In fact, it’s probably almost as old as the cape. And while many will take up the argument that female heroes wearing skimpy clothing is a signifier of their sexual empowerment, characters like Power Girl, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel have all had redesigned costumes at one point or another to maybe lessen the cheesecake factor just a little. One character who inexplicably has not had such a change is X-Men‘s Emma Frost, also known as The White Queen. Since her inception back in the ’80s, she’s pretty much worn variations on white lingerie, sometimes far more revealing than most of the other Marvel women, and some fans are trying to change that.
As pointed out in an editorial on Comics Alliance by Juliet Khan, the explanation that Frost is a confidently sexual person doesn’t really make any sense. Like, practically speaking, her costumes don’t make sense. It’s one thing to lounge around the X Mansion or the Hellfire Club (depending on which side she’s on that month) wearing her regular costume, but when fighting huge battles and going to the store? She’s evidently a fashionista and yet she wears the same, hyper-revealing thing all the time.
This is where the Emma Frost Fashion Redesign Project has come in to play. Started by artist and fan Terry Blas and going off of the many salient points from Khan’s article, artists have taken to a Tumblr to give their own two cents on what Ms. Frost could be wearing when she’s teaching at the school, fighting against enemies, or just walking around being a mutant with a strong sense of style. Blas contends that it’s all well and good for fans to want their heroes to have recognizable uniforms, but “Fashion is all about change and trend.”
There’ve certainly been times when Frost has changed things up from various types of underwear, as in her Earth-41001 and Generation X outfits that are still undeniably sexy but much more practical, however that hasn’t been the norm. With the Emma Frost Fashion Project, fans are designing their own looks for the White Queen and attempting to bring her look more in line with her character as written.
