Art that mashes together two different franchises has been happening for years, but I didn’t recognize the popularity of the concept until I encountered the work of James Hance. He combines worlds in a way that is as his tagline says, relentlessly cheerful. Hance has a knack for blending together characters and objects; his Winnie the Pooh meets Star Wars combo called Wookiee the Chew is proof of his skill in that department. Besides having an eye for mash-ups, Hance is a damn fine artist. He captures likenesses of the Doctor (any of them), Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones or Han Solo, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent, Grover – everyone and everything. His fan art ranges from cartoony to insanely realistic, and he’s constantly working on new illustrations.
