Exclusive: Jessica Chastain Offered Lead Role in HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2 [UPDATED]

Exclusive: Jessica Chastain Offered Lead Role in HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2 [UPDATED]

UPDATE 2: Variety is reporting that Jessica Chastain confirmed at a press conference in Cannes that she will not be starring in True Detective. But, time is a zero dark circle, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for season 3.

UPDATE: According to TheWrap, Chastain’s publicist Nicole Perna said “I can tell you she’s not doing this project officially.” E! Online is reporting that HBO has denied that Chastain will be heading to the series. Here’s hoping it’s another Errol Childress-style misdirect and we’ll get the cast of our dreams soon enough. We’ll continue to update the story with details as they develop.

It’s hard to deny the most impactful show of the last season was HBO’s True Detective. From the word “go,” audiences were instantly on board with the twenty year journey of Rust and Marty to find the elusive Yellow King. In the end, the series reached massive critical acclaim and was confirmed to be seeking a full blown Outstanding Drama Series for HBO come Emmy time. But with all this critical acclaim comes questions, since the series exists in an anthology format that would completely retool the cast and story arc in Season 2. The major question looming over next year’s production? Who is going to lead the charge?

Recent rumors have stated series creator Nic Pizzolatto was seeking a female-driven cast for Season 2 of the hit HBO series, and now today, Nerdist has learned exclusively one of the names that may be on the bill in 2015: Jessica Chastain.

According to sources, the Zero Dark Thirty actress has been offered a leading role in the second season but has yet to accept. As for official confirmation, we reached out to representatives for Chastain, who have declined to comment at this time.

This would be a major land for the HBO series. Chastain has taken off since Zero Dark Thirty (Interstellar, anyone?), and as she continues to rise, it would be fascinating to see what she could do with a character over a ten-episode arc. As for who would stand alongside the Academy Award-nominated actress, that’s anyone’s guess, but for now, this is the best result we could have asked for.

Are you excited for a Chastain-led True Detective? Who would you like to see paired with her? Let us know below.

  1. Lynn says:

Ryan Gosling would be a great match or Joaquin Phoenix. If they want another female actor I think Kate Winslett or Jillian Anderson would be great.

  2. donovan says:

Wasn’t Brad Pitt in talks for the second season? Anyway, Powers Boothe & Joaquin Phoenix would be a cool team…

  3. Ben Sharps says:

I made my post, then scrolled down and the negative comments started? I didn’t see anything in the article that would generate negativity? Why can’t you people be happy? If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything. Ever heard of that advise?

  4. Ben Sharps says:

Yes I am looking forward to the next season. I’m thinking Hilary Swank or Claire Dane would be a good match for this type of movie.

  5. janice martel says:

i want to watch the movie Thank You!

  6. janice martel says:

i am janice ..i want to watch the movie that you are a leading the actress.

  7. Good job guys you immediately got debunked

  8. andyofct says:

Liars!!! I trusted you and nerdpunched me right in nards! I still love you Chastain!

  9. tyhardman says:

    @dalilaalirajah!!! tweet tweet!

  10. Curly says:

Zach Galifanakis (most definitely spelled wrong) and Pee Wee Herman.

  11. alex says:

Well, you should check your ‘sources’ more carefully because her reps and HBO themselves have just denied this.

  12. Victor says:

Yes please. I want this gorgeus red hair in the second season of True Detective.

  13. TheFutureEmbrace says:

Two things: their hunt for The Yellow King is 17 years, not 20, and there will be 8 episodes not 10 (just like season 1).

But I think she’s a great choice as far as female leads go. She was exquisite in The Tree of Life. I just hope they pair her with a guy (Sam Rockwell, Ben Foster, Michael Pitt, anyone?) rather than another woman.

  14. Michael says:

  15. quipquippington says:

I don’t think this would work so well. Definitely a no to Jessica Chastain. I’d rather see, say, a team up of Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling. Or Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Now THOSE would be amazing!

  16. wasim says:

awsome pic. would love to watch her

  17. Arysta says:

Anyone as long as it’s a female.

    • globusofgolan says:

That’s a terrible rationale. Now I’m hoping it’s two men again just to teach you to be more open-minded.

  18. Tim says:

She was just terrible in ZDT, an Oscar was never less deserved,

  19. SQLChicken says:

I’ll throw one from nerd left field but: Benicio del Torro

    • Hank says:

That dynamic (young white woman with older Latin man) is already established with FX’s “The Bridge,” which is pretty damn good in its own right and about to start Season 2 this summer.

  21. chiluflin says:

Pairing her with Robin Wright would be a dream cast. But I doubt Robin wants to keep doing tv, she belongs to the big screen, and I can’t wait to see her working with great directors to get that Oscar that she deserves since such a long time

  22. Shar says:

  23. tipofthenip says:

    betty white

  24. Othen says:

    Margo Martindale!

  25. FALLONE says:

  26. theom says:

I hope this ugly cunt sticks to shitty movies because I don’t want her in True Detective. From McConaughey to this? Bwhahaha.

  27. Lauren Hellner says:

Female: Glenn Close or Robin Wright YES! Male: Joaquin Pheonix or Ryan Gosling YES!

  28. generand says:

I am more interested in knowing what the plot will be. It’d be cool if season two centered around federal detectives or a PI instead of local homicide guys. And instead of a serial killer, maybe a mob or corporation doing the killings.

    • seanicus says:

So…basically a different show. You want to watch her star in a different show.

      • Arysta says:

It will be a different show. That’s why they ordered the following words in this manner: “the series exists in an anthology format that would completely retool the cast and story arc in Season 2”

  29. c-deezy says:

What a great pick. Imagine if she were paired up with Rachel McAdams. And Ryan Gosling. OH AND THEY FALL IN LOVE… BUT SHE GETS DEMENTIA IN HER OLD AGE

  30. Nicole says:

Helen Mirren, Marg Helgenberger or Ryan Gosling

  31. idontknow says:

YES. And paired with Lupita Nyong’o or Patricia Clarkson.

  32. jehawks says:

Laura Dern – this should be easy.

  33. Impactful is not a goddamned word!

  34. Anna Kendrick. dream partnership decided. make it happen

  35. Matthew Mc Conaughey and Woody Harrelson

  36. Colin Biggs says:

A pairing with Glenn Close could be interesting, though we have no idea what kind of partner dynamic they are going for this time.

  37. Greg Guro says:

I exploded in my pants when I read this. SHE’S PERFECT!

  38. PoochScrewed says:

    Sarah Linden

  39. Jennifer Connelly would be a great partner.

  40. Matt Evans says:

Julianne Nicholson would be an excellent partner. Rose Leslie would be amazing, but maybe too much pale redheadness. “You know nothing chief!”

  41. CCH Pounder in all the things!

  42. Flo says:

Pair her with Gillian Anderson. 😀 Maybe Michelle Rodriguez.

  43. Dan Casey says:

Very on board with this. My vote is Robin Wright.

  44. scott kurland says:

Jennifer Lawrence that would be some good TV

  45. Jacob Schoor says:

I’m all for this. She’s an amazing actress. Great scoop Nerdist!
