Though you may be familiar with the film I Am Number Four, that movie was based on the first book of a long-running science fiction young adult series, The Lorien Legacies. The story began with I Am Number Four, which follows a group of teenagers with special powers (a.k.a the titular Legacies) from the planet Lorien, known as the Garde, are on the run from the Mogadorians, another alien race who can only kill the Legacies in order. John Smith is number four, and the next one in line to be murdered.
The series follows the John Smith and the Garde through the New York Times bestselling books I Am Number Four, The Power of Six, The Rise of the Nine, The Fall of the Five, The Revenge of the Seven… and now, we have an exclusive sneak peek at the 6th book in the series, The Fate of Ten, which hit bookstores this week! Not only do we have an advance look at an excerpt from the novel, we also have a Q&A with the author himself, Pittacus Lore.
In The Fate of Ten, the Garde are no longer fighting the Mogadorians in secret. Earth’s invasion has begun and it’s up to the Garde to save the planet from annihilation. Here is Pittacus Lore to tell us more about what we’ll learn in the penultimate book in the series.
Nerdist: The Fate of Ten is your sixth chronicle of the Garde’s fight for survival. What have you learned about them—and yourself—by recording their story?
Pittacus Lore: The Garde’s courage has surprised even me. Their journey hasn’t been easy: fleeing their world, growing up on an alien planet, and fearing for their lives. The gifts bestowed upon the Garde by Lorien gave them tremendous power. They have shown the integrity to use their Legacies for the benefit of all life forms. I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow brothers and sisters of Lorien.
N: In this latest book, humans are developing Legacies? Cool, but how?
PL: Yes, the gifts of Lorien have been bestowed upon numerous humans. Loralite is spreading through the Earth and it will attach itself to all living things. It grows on your planet like the roots of trees. I have not yet discovered why certain individuals are chosen, but it is clear they are all special. As we know from the Mongadorians’ leader, Setrákus Ra, however, not everyone uses their power for good.
N: Any chance we’ll learn more about your role in Lorien history in The Fate of Ten?
PL: My story is part of the Garde’s story, so I feel you learn something about my place in Lorien history in every book. However, in this new book you will learn more about my history with Setrákus Ra and how that has led us to this day.
N: Before we read Chapter Three of The Fate of Ten, tell us a little more about the new human character who has Legacies. What was it like writing, or er, meeting her?
PL: The human you are about to meet displays bravery beyond her years. Much like the Garde, she will face a difficult choice: to fight the Mogs or to run. For all our sakes, I hope she and humanity decide to fight.
