This August, DC Comics is preparing to drops some major bombshells. No, they’re not unleashing a series of explosives on the unsuspecting populace of Gotham City (that’s the Joker’s job); rather, they are releasing a series of variant covers entitled “DC Comics Bombshells,” inspired by the vintage art of World War II. Among those receiving the Bombshell treatment will be Ravager, Raven, and Cheetah, as well as Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Sinestro and Nightwing.
While you’ll have to wait until August to see them all, we have an exclusive preview gallery below of the following titles:
- AQUAMAN #43 by Ant Lucia – featuring Aquaman
- FLASH #43 by Ant Lucia – featuring Killer Frost
- JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #3 by Terry Dodson w/ Rachel Dodson – featuring Wonder Woman
- NEW SUICIDE SQUAD #11 by Des Taylor – featuring Poison Ivy & Cheetah
This isn’t the first time DC has rocked the retro look on their covers. Back in June 2014, DC had a similarly themed month of Bombshell-style variant covers. This year, though, they’re taking things one step further by transforming the designs into a series of statues from DC Collectibles, and launching a new ongoing digital-first comic series entitled DC Comics Bombshells. Written by Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Marguerite Sauvage, DC Comics Bombshells #1 will tell the story of retro-bombshell versions of Batwoman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl in an alternate reality in which female superheroes fight on the front lines of World War II.
DC Comics Bombshells #1 will be available on August 12. The DC Collectibles statues — including new sculpts of Cheetah and Killer Frost — will be available in Spring 2016.
