The Star Wars prequels have their moments, and many of those moments involve Ewan McGregor as a less grizzled, more honest Obi-Wan Kenobi. He took on the role made famous by Alec Guinness and added depth to it. If we were to get more Obi-Wan in the films, I’d love to see McGregor return to the Jedi’s robes, and it turns out that he feels the same way. He reiterated his feelings about playing the character again during an appearance at the Edinburgh International Film Festival over the weekend. It’s not exactly news–McGregor tweeted the below the day Disney bought Lucasfilm–but it is reassuring to know he’s still in.
In regards to being Obi-Wan once more, McGregor said, “I’ll say it publicly, here, now. I’d be happy to do the story between Episode III, that I finished in, and Episode IV that Alec Guinness started in. I think that would be good. Disney should definitely do that.”
Yes, Disney, you should. Though it’s not part of canon, the book Kenobi by John Jackson Miller explores some of Obi-Wan’s time alone in the deserts of Tatooine, and it could be the foundation for an interesting film. I’d certainly rather see a Kenobi story in that period rather than going back in time, before the prequels.
And I also hope we hear Obi-Wan referenced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. A Force ghost isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility either. McGregor’s looking forward to seeing to the sequel and threw the tiniest bit of shade at Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber. He said, “I’m excited about it as much as anyone else. I saw the trailer and it looks like he [J.J. Abrams] absolutely nailed it and it feels right. But I’m not sure about the [crossguard] lightsaber. If you fight with a lightsaber properly you don’t need one.” I feel like Obi-Wan would know a lot about this subject.”
