Emma Watson moved on from Hogwarts long ago, but she’s not done with castles. Watson has been cast as Belle in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. The 1991 animated version of the film was wildly popular and even garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. It’s unknown how closely the live-action take will match the tale as old as time but going by Watson’s excited Facebook post, we know that there will be dancing and singing:
“I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
Beauty and the Beast is the latest film to join a line-up of live-action adaptations from Disney. We’ve already seen Maleficent, and Cinderella and The Jungle Book are in the works. Beauty and the Beast will be directed by Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) and produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. A Disney press release states filming will begin later this year.
The woman who played Hermione Granger is going to be Belle. And given Watson’s #HeForShe campaign, it will be extra satisfying to see her put Gaston in his place.
