We’ve seen our fair share of fan-made Dark Souls content, but film director Eli Roth‘s (Hostel, Cabin Fever) animated trailer for Dark Souls III is hands down our favorite. If you’re wondering whether you read that right, you did: yes, Roth directed a Dark Souls trailer, and yes, he’s a massive fan of the series. He teamed up with the folks at Bandai Namco to release an animated short film titled The Witches. Check it out above.
Roth adds his own disturbing twist to the existing Dark Souls universe. In the trailer above, we see a Medieval-style knight searching the dark castle corridors for something. As soon as he comes across a room with a trio of terrifying witches (which are clearly inspired by the old hags in Dark Souls II), all hell breaks loose. Seriously, seeing crows peck out the man’s eyes is the stuff of nightmares.
In addition to sharing the trailer, Bandai also shared the below behind-the-scenes video. In it, Roth notes, “I’ve always loved Medieval History. I’ve always wanted to do something that was in the space with knights and fire.”
According to the video, the director played a lot of both Dark Souls, and Dark Souls II to get a feel for the architecture, and describes himself as a fan of FromSoftware’s famous franchise. Roth and his team worked closely with the Namco team to get the look and content just right.
“Now that I’ve done this, and it’s gone so well, I really want to do it more,” said Roth.
With Dark Souls III launching worldwide on April 12, the video’s release was perfectly timed, and a great way to get pumped for the game! If you’re as excited for it as we are, don’t forget to check out my hands-on preview, and rundown of some of the things I learned after playing the first four hours.
