Mark your calendars, movie fans! Robert Zemeckis is coming to The Director’s Chair.
The Director’s Chair is an in-depth and ongoing series airing on the El Rey Network featuring network curator Robert Rodriguez in conversation with a fellow director. The purpose of the show is for filmmakers to interview each other in order to provide creative insights that only they could think to ask. Previous guests have included horror master John Carpenter, the eclectic Guillermo del Toro, Quentin Tarantino in a two-part episode, five-time Academy Award winner Francis Ford Coppola, and Luiz Valdez. Now, Rodriguez has added Oscar winner and cinematic icon Robert Zemeckis to the list.
In the episode, premiering on El Ray on May 31, the two discuss Zemeckis’ unlikely start in show business as well as the beginning of his career, which was sandbagged by two consecutive flops despite winning the first ever student Academy Award. Zemeckis and Rodriguez discuss the making of Romancing the Stone, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Back to the Future Part II, Forrest Gump, Flight and more in the thorough conversation between the directors. The pair also talk about their affinity for creating and using technology to tell stories, why Zemeckis enjoys being a digital filmmaker and how friend and frequent collaborator Steven Spielberg has been present throughout his almost forty year professional career.
