In a recent radio interview with Power 99 in Philadelphia, former N.W.A. member Ice Cube talked about the new biopic, Straight Outta Compton, coming out on August 14. During the interview, he made mention of a new album from fellow N.W.A. member Dr. Dre, but made it sound like the legendary producer might be making an album independent of the soundtrack. Check it out below around the 10:15 mark.
What is not confirmed is whether this album will be acting as the soundtrack to the film or not, which Dre was also working on with help from Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. Cube goes on to plug the album by saying, “It’s mega, you know, it’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record.” This seems to hint that the album won’t be the soundtrack, but a full release from Dre, who hasn’t put out an album since 1999. Could it be the infamous Detox? At this point it seems to have developed into an in-joke among Dre and his friends that the album will either never come out, or won’t be released until at least 2020.
The announcement of a new Dre album is something that should be hitting all of the major music outlets, but the fact that it had to be mentioned in passing by Ice Cube in a radio interview leads me to wonder what kind of a release it will really be. Dre has periodically put out a song or two over the last sixteen years, focusing more on producing, as well as his reach as an entrepreneur. The 2008 death of his son was a major factor in Dre losing touch with his music, and a roadblock many wondered if he’d overcome. It looks like we will have to wait until Saturday to find out what Dre has decided to share with the world.
Looking forward to reminding everyone you never forgot about Dre? Let us know in the comments below.
