DOCTOR WHO – Peter Capaldi’s Costume Revealed

DOCTOR WHO – Peter Capaldi’s Costume Revealed

We’ve only just said goodbye to Matt Smith and we’re still over half a year away from the first full episode featuring the Twelfth (or Fourteenth, depending on how pedantic you are) Doctor, Peter Capaldi, but we now have our first glimpse at what his costume will be and… it’s pretty awesome.

He’s wearing a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining (a bit like Jon Pertwee’s cape in his first season in 1970), blue trousers, blue vest, white shirt, and black Dr. Martens in a look created by costume designer Howard Burden.

From the official press release, here’s what Capaldi and executive producer Steven Moffat have to say about the outfit:

“He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming of the new Doctor’s first episode began earlier this month, and Moffat has promised us 12 or 13 uninterrupted weeks of Doctor Who, so it looks like Autumn will be all about Capaldi. I, for one, think if I were ever going to cosplay (which is very unlikely), this would be the one I’d do because, damn. Would you dress up as this Doctor? How does it compare to his other costumes? Leave us notes like it’s study hall.

  1. Bella says:

First thing I thought when I saw this pic was that it reminded me of Pertwee’ s cape in his inaugural episode! Glad to see you caught that too. I think it’s completely refreshing. Makes me excited to see what personality will go with those threads. I’m also intrigued to see how they weave the past doctors’ essences into #12. That’ll be a nice change.

So glad they aren’t going back to something totally lame like #9’s. Whew.

  2. Neo says:

Nod to Pertwee is a good sign – maybe Who will be less of a Brit soap and more of a brainy action series again

  3. John McG says:

Liking the mix of sophisticate and punk. I saw Peter Capaldi in a Glasgow coffee shop a few weeks back and he was dressed in very similar clothes. I guess Glaswegians are just cool!

  4. JoshT says:

It’s actually a cardigan, not a vest. I’m pretty stoked about the cardigans :)

  5. Jen says:

He looks awesome. Im loving the doc martens!!. It looks like hes channeling his punk band days!!!

  6. pdcrittenden says:

Also, I predict the jacket lining will change from red to blue depending on when they are.

  7. pdcrittenden says:

I pretty much dig it. I love the Doc’s and like the pants. I have to say though, I really wanted him to look like an old punk rocker. I’m getting tired of the pseudo-Victorian steampunk look. Maybe give him an old black leather jacket and a faded Union Jack tee.

  8. Nathan says:

he looks like a magician….hes going to be awesome

  9. jen san says:

    DOC MARTENS!!!!! OF COURSE!!!

  10. Doctor Meh says:

Capaldi, put on a tie or undo that top button.
Aside from that I’m really looking forward to seeing his portrayal of The Doctor.

  11. Jarrod Egerton says:

    The Finger Pointing…
    It’s a Pertwee thing.

And that’s just one of many.

    Best

  12. Matt Barclay says:

I think that the author was counting the Metacrisis Doctor as a “Doctor”, seeing as the show says that used a regeneration

  13. Jim says:

Gary, I think perhaps he may have added the Peter Cushing Doctor from the two separate, non-canon films into the count.

  14. Mother Superior of the Church of the Papal Mainframe. says:

That’ll work for me.Nobody actually needs a decorative vegetable to be authoritative. Not so flash as to be incongruous but suitable for a variety of different climates. Please unleash his badness on Madame Kovarian for messing about Amy and Rory. She’s really got it coming, big style.

  15. James Brazil says:

he needs something around his neck region

  16. sam says:

I do dress up as this doctor! I wear it a lot! I always wear my crombie coat , shirt, dark trousers and doc martens. I am the twelth Doctor without even trying! Haloween costume sorted out

  17. Oliver says:

Well, I think the trousers look very out of place and the cut of the jacket is a bit too reminiscient of Matt’s last outfit…

Actually, the more I think about it, it’s really the jacket that’s distracting me slightly more than the trousers… Definitely will have to see this in action before final judgement.

Other than that, I do definitely get the “rebel” vibe they were going for… that slightly military-style bottom half (i.e. boots and trousers) is actually kinda aggressive… I currently can’t imagine this will be a Doctor that will be universally liked and welcomed whereever he appears like his preceding incarnations were…

I’m also looking forward to the story behind that costume if there is one (unless he’s just picking it from the TARDIS’ wardrobe like many(/most?) of his predecessors did).

  18. Jackassery says:

Wonderful. I think it fits perfectly.

  19. Chathi says:

I love it. I am especially interested to see how his personality will fit the costume. That’s always been one of the best/worst parts of the show. I hate seeing the old Doctor go, but getting to know the new one and watching all the pieces of the puzzle come together to create the new Doctor is worth it. =) Can’t wait to see him (and his suit!) in action!

  20. T’lee says:

Can we talk about his spidey hands, tho. What is that pose?

  21. Chris Vin says:

I like the new look, it has a dark undertone. Based on what Capaldi and Moffat had to say, ” just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” and “Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over!”, this Doctor is out to restore Gallifrey by all means possible. NO “monsters” can keep the Doctor from returning the children of Gallifrey to the universe. In doing so, the Doctor will not let a time war happen because he’s the Doctor, a clever boy!

  22. Kris G says:

I love the faux three-piece suit idea, and the red lining is a nice perk up. For me, the pants definitely need to be more tailored. I could see this going towards sort of Regency-era drop-front button trousers with a slim leg.

  23. I look forward to a time when the Doctor isn’t treated like a character from Gilligan’s Island who must always wear the same “costume.”

  24. Ray Norberto says:

Looks spare and no frills, yet dashing.

  25. Joel says:

Maybe he should pull K-9 out of that Black hole, maybe….. That should be his…thing.

  26. Pixie says:

Is no one digging that he’s wearing Doc Martens?! Because I LOVE IT!!! That’s IT, that’s what makes him cool for me! We are going to have a punk-rockin’ Doctor and I’m stoked!

  27. Bill R says:

Gary /\ 10 regenerated and kept the same face as explained in the time of the doctor.

  28. Bill R, says:

Looks like Matt’s doctor got old and decided he didn’t need the bowtie anymore.

  29. anthony says:

i think the vampire/magician look is his “thing”, but then again i could be wrong………

  30. Moriarty. says:

My mind automatically went “Ood” for some reason.

The hand reminds me of the Silence.

I’m torn between love and hate.

  31. Gary Demello says:

Fourteenth? What was this writer smoking? There have been 13 regenerations, and 11 Doctors, and 1 War Doctor. How does that add up to 14?

  32. Michelle Evans says:

I think a walking stick would be perfect.

  33. Clueless Neophyte says:

But we can’t have another Doctor in bow ties, can we? Especially after the last one just wore that signature piece of couture? Not sure what would be a better sartorial hook. Walking stick, maybe? Kangol cap? Bright red Chucks?

  34. Kathy says:

I think it’s amazing! Can’t wait for the new episodes.

  35. Kim Neff says:

I think Peter is the perfect accessory for this outfit.

  36. Nick Goroff says:

Not a bad look. I will miss the bow tie and odd ball hats, but given the number of costume changes Matt Smith went through during his tenure as the Time Lord, I wouldn’t be shocked it this changed here and there.
Interesting note and something I’m curious to see if they continue, but both Matt Smith and David Tennants incarnations both had costume changes that would coordinate with whether they were going forward into the future or back into the past. For Tennant, the changes were between his brown and blue suits. For Smith, the red or blue bow ties were matched against the suspenders and accents on his shirt. I believe blue was for future trips and red was in the past.

  37. BethH says:

Hmmmm, could be interesting. Rather like an edgy Bond outfit. Let’s see how he wields it ;-)

  38. Sean says:

It’s not the best, however its by far not the worse. He looks like a magician. Should call the show ” The Amazing Doctor!”

  39. Mghollis38 says:

I agree. It needs a bit something “more.” I’m reserving judgement till I see it in action.

  40. Allison KB says:

It is very dapper, and a bit of a return to classic Doctor Who, which I like. However, I agree that he does need a “thing”. The “thing” has been a large part of how the Doctor’s personality has been differentiated from his previous regenerations. Maybe this will be the Doctor with the jacket lining of many colors?

  41. Brieahn J. says:

Someone pointed out that he is wearing “Beiber Pants.” I would like to state for the record that until this moment I did not know such things existed, but upon further research I have to conclude that they are indeed “Beiber Pants.”

  42. Courtney Lindstrom says:

It looks very British. Capaldi looks like he is wearing the Union Jack. I love the pop of red in the lining; it will look very cool flapping about as he is running.

  43. ThePlaidMan says:

Looks a lot like the first Doctor’s costume. Interesting way to move forward after the series anniversary. Maybe that was the plan all along.

  44. Lizzie S says:

I have to say… I like it. I love how it has a variety or styles from different eras. And I’m super excited to see how this new doctor will behave and his mannerisms and of course… the catch phrase!

  45. rachelle says:

actually pretty kick ass…but I miss the bow-ties. Cause bow-ties are cool.

  46. StuartB says:

    LOVE IT! So excited.

  47. Duke says:

Kinda drab. Seems like every doctor had something that stood out and he doesn’t really. Looks like a vampire.
