Snapchat’s format has allowed companies to experiment with different kinds of outreach and new storytelling methods. One company to leverage the social media service is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), who’ve been sharing items from their collection through Snapchat, using a humorous approach to get pieces in front of fresh eyes. And now, they’re showing off their artwork in a new way. LACMA is teaming up with Disney in a match made in digital heaven. They’ll be working with Oh My Disney to retell Disney’s classic stories via Snapchat using items from their collection.
LACMA has over 130,000 works to draw from. They’ll choose pieces that best represent the story at hand and use filters, memes, and overlays to illustrate the narrative. LACMA and OhMyDisney are starting with a tale as old time, Beauty and the Beast. Here, have a preview and see how this collaboration will go:
I’m all for using any available tools to get more people interested in art and culture, and this team-up could definitely have that effect. VP of Content and Audience Development at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Dan Reynolds said in a statement, “The LACMA Snapchat account already captures that contemporary and culturally savvy voice and tone that our OhMyDisney Snapchat audience loves, and this collaboration is a natural way to add a little magic to art and storytelling to reach a new generation of art and Disney fans alike.”
Follow along with the collaboration on the @LACMA and @OhMyDisney Snapchats starting on October 19 (it will begin at LACMA and wrap up at OhMyDisney). They’ll share new interpretations of Disney classics on a bi-monthly basis. While you’re waiting for the story to start, jump to the comments tell me about art you’ve seen that reminds you of Disney animated films.
