A new era for Bungie’s space shooter Destiny is coming. Not only was it announced that Peter Dinklage would no longer voice every Guardian’s trusty bot companion, we also got news that the once convoluted level cap system would be simplified with The Taken King expansion. Before you roll your eyes, this upcoming redesign is encouraging for long time players. The news comes from one of Game Informer‘s recent visits to the developer’s studio.
First and foremost, the level cap will garner a significant boost, and will go all the way up to 40. Experience points will be gained in the same manner as before, simply defeat enemies, complete missions, and submit bounties. The difference here is that said points will go straight to your character all the way through 40, instead of relying on your gear to reach the pinnacle. Hitting level 20 and then having to depend on the random item generator to reach the cap was simply frustrating.
Bungie also mentioned that new item drops will pay closer attention to the gear you already own to calculate appropriate loot to grace Guardians with. These changes were made so that players gain meaningful items, opposed to the same garbage chest piece that was useless 20 levels ago.
Along with these changes, year-one gear will only be useful for the first couple hours of the upcoming expansion. Rapidly after that, players will have to adapt with the new weapons and armor since they will provide higher attack/defense values and interesting new abilities.
All of this sounds great, but all of this should have been part of the original package. These two specific changes were asked for since day one. It’s a shame it took this long to figure out that the original system was a headache. Will this be enough to bring back in the players who left?
