Last year, test footage for a possible Deadpool movie leaked online, and the internet went CRAZY. That fervor is part of the reason 20th Century Fox eventually greenlit the actual film. Ryan Reynolds acknowledged that on Conan last week.
By now, everyone has seen the trailer (if not, you can check out the red band version here), and it is glorious. It captures the humor, violence, and totally insanity we come to expect from our Merc with a Mouth. Some fans may be wondering why the trailer looks familiar. That’s because they transferred a good portion of the original test footage to the actual film. Take a look below at the side by side comparison:
From the looks of it, the filmmakers went with an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach, as it emulated the test footage almost shot for shot. The only differences seem to be the soundtrack in the film rather than Reynolds’ dialogue from the test footage. The film also has a mix of CGI Deadpool with the real thing, where the test footage is motion captured. Looking at the test footage, you can actually see Reynolds’ face IN the mask more than in the film version.
I think that putting the scene that helped get the film made was a great nod to the fans that went crazy over it. It’s their way of saying “Chimichangas for EVERYONE!”
So what do you think? Is the film doing the test footage justice? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
