Sometimes you’re a queen imbued with immeasurable power, but you’re deeply insecure, so you murder your sister’s child because a talking, anthropomorphic mirror told you it was the only way to ensure that you were still the most beautiful in all the land. Sometimes your sister unleashes immeasurable powers of her own and swears revenge on you for murdering her child, plunging the land into abject war and magical chaos. Sometimes you’re Chris Hemsworth and someone has replaced your trusty hammer Mjolnir with an axe, then forced you to wage war. And if you just so happen to be Chris Hemsworth, this is your reaction to all of the above:
Okay, okay, you got me, it’s not that bad. I just couldn’t resist screencapping that truly preposterous mug. The Huntsman: Winter’s War‘s latest trailer looks like a weird piece of Frozen–meets-Game of Thrones fan fiction — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The film, directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, serves as a prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, telling the story of how evil Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) betrayed her good sister Freya (Emily Blunt) and plunges the kingdom into a magical war. It’s up to Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Chris Hemsworth), and a warrior named Sara (Jessica Chastain) to defeat Ravenna and restore order to the realm. Throw in an evil, sentient Magic Mirror that looks like Viserys Targaryen after his season one crowning, Charlize Theron’s spooky tentacle powers, and Chris Hemsworth’s charismatic smoldering and you have a recipe for what looks like an over-the-top good time. Or maybe you’ll be making Chris Hemsworth’s screencapped face the entire time, in which case, hey, at least you got a good facial workout.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War opens on April 22, 2016.
