If you’re a horror fan like me, you know it can be hard to find a genre feature that makes its way onto the big screen without being a part of a pre-existing franchise. But good news came Monday morning when The Wrap reported that Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown director Catherine Hardwicke would helm an original horror thriller titled Wish Upon. From a script by Barbara Marshall, Wish Upon tells the story of “a 16-year-old girl who finds a magic box that promises to grant her seven wishes, but with each wish comes dark and gruesome consequences.” The film is being produced by Cloverfield‘s Sherryl Clark.
In addition to the independent films that put her on the map, Hardwicke has made some more commercial movies as well — including the feature film adaptation of Twilight and Red Riding Hood. She’s since directed some television including episodes of Hell on Wheels and Eye Candy and her most recent film, Miss You Already, starred Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette.
All I know is if someone had granted me seven wishes when I was sixteen, I would be married to someone from *NSYNC and Buffy The Vampire Slayer would have never ended. But it’s certainly a different world and I can only imagine what kind of trouble this young gal could get into with seven wishes in her hands. I’m absolutely intrigued by this premise and am excited to see what Wish Upon is like!
How about you? Are you excited to see a straight horror film from Catherine Hardwicke? Tell us in the comments!
