Potty Mouth are the sonic equivalent of an episode of The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
The garage punk outfit from the Northeast turn all the vicissitudes of young adulthood into instantly accessible—but totally cathartic and rough-around-the edges—rock music. In a profile from 2013, the group was described as patiently waiting for whatever was next in all the young bandmates lives: they’re young enough for uncertainty to be a sort of luxury instead of an ever-looming specter of existential dread. This is not to say that being young is easy by any means; in fact, quite the opposite. But lead singer Abby Weems and the rest of her band think about the pitfalls and triumphs in equal measure, making incredibly good music as the upshot.
Presumably, this is the reason why the theme of their Car Tunes and Cartoons playlist, named after the first track by Sheryl Crow, is “If It Makes You Happy”. If you are trying to figure life out, the hardest, but most basic litmus test about anything is, “does this make me happy?” The answer to that question for us is a resounding yes. Listening to a playlist full of female fronted bands from the ’90s is one of the finer joys in life, and bassist Ally Einbinder’s playlist is close to an end-all-be-all collection of gems. If you are a fan of Garbage, Veruca Salt, Ivy, or L7, you are in for a treat. Check that out below, and enjoy Abby’s rad skater girl/dalmation sketch above.
This playlist is a pretty accurate representation of our band’s biggest inspirations. It’s also a pretty accurate representation of the kind of stuff we all like to listen to together when we’re on the road. We’ve been listening to a lot of Sheryl Crow lately and we decided to name the playlist after one of our favorite Sheryl Crow tracks, “If It Makes You Happy.” It’s fitting for the whole playlist because all of these songs really make us happy. In fact, we’ll probably put it on as soon as we finish writing this. We hope you enjoy!
Thanks for checking out another installment of Car Tunes and Cartoons; we will be back soon with more! Much <3.
