While Captain America‘s current round of mainstream popularity dates back to Cap’s 2011 solo film, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon‘s patriotic hero has been an important American symbol since his debut in 1941. One of the most important parts of Cap’s iconography is his nearly indestructible shield, which he uses for defense and offensive both on the printed page and in live-action adventures.
With Captain America: Civil War just under two weeks away, professional shooter and YouTube personality Jerry Miculek has put Cap’s shield to the test in the first installment of a two-part video. As Miculek wryly notes in the first part, there is no Vibranium-steel alloy in reality. Therefore, Miculek and his collaborators went for “the next best thing.” The shield used in this video was constructed with solid titanium in the correct dimensions from Marvel’s comic book universe, right down to the weight of 12 pounds. It’s actually a really terrific recreation of Cap’s shield that would make any cosplayer proud.
Speaking of which, Miculek let his own fanboy colors fly as he cosplayed as Cap during this demonstration. Miculek also showed off his skills with a .45 ACP as he let off eight shots in rapid succession at the shield, all of which appeared to hit the mark.
And how did Miculek’s Captain America shield hold up against live ammo? Pretty well, actually. But you’ll have to watch the video to see what became of the shield.
