It seems like it’s been too long since we’ve had Hannibal on our TV screens. And even though Bryan Fuller is currently one of the busiest men in television, he’s still keeping an eye towards bringing the show back for more. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, there’s gonna be at least another year before any progress can be made.
While speaking with Collider, Fuller dropped the following piece of tantalizing info: “Two years after the last airing of the show, we can investigate our options,” said Fuller. “August 2017 is when we can actually start talking about it. That’s when we would have to see what the rights are for the character and for the story, and see who’s interested and how we get it done. I have the story, and the cast is excited for the story, so we’re ready to go if somebody wants to go.”
In the meantime, Fuller is bringing American Gods to TV and shepherding the new Star Trek series for CBS All Access. Assuming that Fuller and company find a home for Hannibal, that means the earliest it could return in some form would be in 2018. And as much as we want that to happen, there are some roadblocks in the way. Remember, Fuller and his collaborators weren’t able to find a way to continue the series even when the cast was still under contract. It’s only going to get harder now.
Both Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy have indicated that they want to revisit Hannibal, but Mikkelsen is once again in demand for movies and Dancy is starring in The Path for Hulu; which may complicate any Hannibal revival. But as long as they both want to do it, there’s hope.
