9 years ago, Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven divided Marvel’s superhero community into two sides during the epic Civil War miniseries. In 2016, the Invincible Iron Man creative team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez will reignite the ultimate superhero conflict in Civil War II.
Earlier today, Marvel confirmed the rumors of a new Civil War sequel by announcing Bendis and Marquez as the creative team, along with a promo image featuring Iron Man facing off against Sam Wilson’s Captain America. Naturally, this is being timed to debut in April 2016, shortly before the release of Captain America: Civil War, which is loosely based on the original miniseries.
In the first Civil War crossover, Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America and Iron Man were bitterly divided over the issue of superhuman registration. Iron Man came down in favor of government oversight, and Cap led a contingent of “Secret Avengers” who refused to bow to outside control. It took several years for the superheroes to repair the damage caused by the conflict between them.
Because Civil War II is over five months away, it’s too soon to speculate about why the heroes will be fighting this time, or who the various Marvel heroes will side with. Marvel’s comic book universe doesn’t have the same limits that the Civil War feature film has to deal with, which means that the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters are fair game. But we wouldn’t be too shocked if the core members of each side resemble the respective lineups from Captain America: Civil War.
