Earlier this year, Marvel teased plans to bring Iron Man to the forefront of its superhero line. Saturday, Marvel delivered on that promise by adding one of its most popular writers to the next Iron Man book.
At Special Edition: NYC, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez were announced as the new creative team of Invincible Iron Man. The new Iron Man series will be among the first of the All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch that was revealed earlier this week.
Although there was some speculation that this Iron Man would be a different character, Bendis stressed that this is Tony Stark post-Superior Iron Man and after Secret Wars. Bendis also noted that his inspiration for the book came from Iron Man 3. In particular, Bendis recalled the scene where Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) came across a screwdriver while wandering the wreckage of his mansion.
“I loved that shot so much,” noted Bendis. “Everything was destroyed, everything’s over. He picks up his screwdriver and knows exactly what he needs to do next. This is what I would do for Iron Man 4.”
For the book, Bendis and Marquez have created a brand new Iron Man armor that can transform into any of Iron Man’s previous armors as needed. Bendis is also introducing a new supporting cast, new villains, and a new love interest who may be smarter than Tony Stark himself. Bendis will also deal with the dangling plotline from Kieron Gillen’s Iron Man run, namely the revelation that Tony Stark was adopted. Bendis teased that Tony Stark’s birth parents will be revealed.
“[Invincible Iron Man is] this adopted child’s journey of finding out who they really are,” said Bendis. “When you find out what happens at the end of the first issue, he has to make a choice on what he’s willing to do as a superhero to fix things for real.”
Invincible Iron Man # 1 will launch this fall.
