They may have been away in Scarborough Fair or shouting “Timber” to people in the forest, but last night reclusive singing group Black Simon & Garfunkel made their triumphant and typically ethereal return to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This time out, after a suggestion from the Audience Suggestion Box, the folk duo covered Taylor Swift‘s “Shake It Off” using nothing but slow and melodic guitar and simple two-part harmonies before flowing seamlessly into the hook from “The Boxer,” a song made famous by White Simon & Garfunkel. I say, if they release that as a single tomorrow, it would be a top-of-the-charts hit. Perhaps this might be why I’m not in the record biz. They really did bring the point home: The haters ARE going to hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.
This is, of course, another in a line of quick, folkified performances of current pop hits by the duo, made up of the Roots’ “Captain” Kirk Douglas on guitar as “Black Simon,” and everybody’s favorite drummer and comedic goldmine Questlove as “Black Garfunkel,” a perfect choice considering his hair is about exactly the same as White Garfunkel’s. Evidently, the pair is on tour currently with Il Divo (not true).
This isn’t the first time Black Simon & Garfunkel have played on The Tonight Show. Jimmy always seems to see them perform at some swanky speakeasy the night before someone suggests they be on the show, and good for them. They’ve also performed Katy Perry’s “Roar”, and back when Jimmy hosted Late Night they performed Kesha’s “Timber” (where they also add in some “The Boxer” crashes). You can see them both down yonder.
